Reprint from the Spring/Summer issue if Veteran Voices:

The Oregon State chapter of the National Association of Atomic Veterans is working hard to ensure that all veterans exposed to ionizing radiation while serving in the military are registered with the Ion Radiation Registry (IRR), kept by the VA Medical Centers.

Oregon's NAAV state commander, Fred chafer, said many veterans who fit the criteria may have unclaimed benefits due, but need to be registered. In addition, the group is looking for a Washington state Atomic Vet to take the vacant State Commander spot. If interested, call Fred at (541) 258-7453. The mission of the National Association of Atomic Veterans is to assist these veterans in obtaining government recognition and Department of Veteran Affairs health care and financial assistance. To learn more about this organization, visit www.naav.com .

Atomic veterans include members of the United States Armed Forces who were exposed to ionizing radiation fro atomic and nuclear weapons testing during the period beginning with the Trinity Blast of July 16th, 1945 at Alamogordo, New Mexico; continuing through the U.S. clean-up of Nagasaki/Hiroshima; during the 235 atmospheric atomic and nuclear weapons tests in the Pacific and Nevada test sites; until the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty of 1963. To register with IRR call the nearest VAMC at the numbers shown to the left.
