Commander's
Message
I wish to thank my
fellow AMVETS for supporting me as the new commander. I was going to
demand the usual three recounts, but that is old news.
I also want to thank past Commander Lew Foster for his efforts during
the past two years and especially for his volunteer time he has given to
the post the past few months.
My goals for the upcoming year are to keep the post active in it’s many
programs and entertainment activities and build our membership with good
God fearing veterans who care about this organization as much as I do.
My success in this endeavor will depend on the assistance I get from my
officers and members. No one person can accomplish much but a body
united and guided in the right direction can accomplish anything.
I plan on being available at the post on Mondays and Thursdays, as well
as other times when it is necessary, to tackle the business of
Commander. I will always look forward to hearing your ideas to help meet
our goals and make changes to better the organization.
We only have one meeting per month during the summer, June 28th, July
26th and Aug. 23rd, and by then I should remember how to run a meeting.
Hope to see most of you at the Department Convention at Pacific Beach on
the 15th and 16th. Word of mouth is the best advertisement in the world.
Tell your friends and neighbors about AMVETS POST 1.

1st Vice COMMANDER
Hello! Hope everyone is in good shape for
the summer festivities. Our Department campout will be over by the time
you get this article, however, I will let you know how it went in my
article next month. Congratulations to all the new post officers, I hope
your term will be a productive one.
The Saturday Dart tournaments will be held on the 9th and 23rd of the
month. Most of the players liked and wanted POTLUCK for the food at the
tournament, so we will have it again. Bring in your favorite dish around 6
or 6:30 so everyone has a chance to eat prior to playing. Remember its
handicapped, 501 stack, with a raffle afterwards. Anyone can win, come on
down and have fun.
If you have any questions regarding membership, give me a call and I will
try and answer you. Don’t forget to sign up a new member! Remember FLAG
DAY June 14th, and the first day of summer the 21st.
I hope to see everyone at the Campout on
the 1st 2nd & 3rd and the State Convention on the 15th & 16th.

Question: Which one of these flags is the real,
original “Old Glory?”

A. This flag has 13 stripes and 13
stars. The Union rests on a white stripe. Betsy Ross designed the flag in May of
1776. On June 14th of 1777, the Continental Congress adopted the following
resolution: “Resolved: that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes,
alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue
field, representing a new constellation.”

B. This flag has 15 stripes and 15 stars. The Union
rests on a red stripe. It flew over Ft McHenry during the war of 1812.
Francis Scott Key wrote our National Anthem based upon this flag.

C. This flag has 13 stripes and 24 stars. The Union
rests on a white stripe. It flew over Tennessee’s state capitol building
after the Union army captured Nashville on February 25th 1862. Captain
William Driver, an old shipmaster originally from Massachusetts and
retired in Nashville, had it hidden inside his blankets at home during the
civil war.
All three of these flags are National treasures and on display in the
Smithsonian.
Don’t know the answer? Why not come to our Auburn Super Mall “Old Glory*ous
Celebration” on Saturday, June 9th and find out. If you can’t make that,
come on by the post and look me up. I will be glad to give you the answer
for a pounder of beer.
Thank you,
David C. Harris

Sons Of AMVETS
Greetings Sons, our meeting will be
held on Wednesday June 6th at 7:30 in the lounge. The Sons had another
busy month. Thanks to the chili dog fund and our supporters, we were able
to make some very nice donations this month. We donated $100 for the
cleaning fee for kitchen use at the hall for the Thirty-third Calvary Unit
from Kent in which the Sons received a certificate of thanks. The Sons
were also able to make a donation of $500 to the VAVS for socks, t-shirts,
underwear, etc. We really want to send out a thank you to all of those who
support our Monday night chili dogs, and the Ladies Auxiliary for donating
16 cases of chili. The 4th of July is near, let’s have a safe one and
remember why we celebrate this day while having a great time.

INFORMATION FOR EVERYONE
My
printer cartridge ran out of ink, and I found that I did not have any new
cartridges. Then, I spoke with member Ray Edie and he told me that Walgreens
Drug Stores can refill ink cartridges while you wait. So we drove over there
and they did refill mine in less than ten minutes. The cost is ONLY $10.00 for
a black cartridge and $15.00 for a color cartridge, plus tax. I called them
today, and they told me that ALL Walgreens refill ink cartridges. So you
can save a lot of money by getting them
refilled over purchasing new ink cartridges. |
